There can be few places better in the world to relax and get away from it all than the beautiful French countryside; rolling hills, delectable wines and cheeses, what’s not to like! Renting a house here with your family or a group of friends is the perfect way to holiday as a group as you’ve got all the space you need and beautiful surroundings to bond over, oh and did I mention the wine?! Nicotiana French Farmhouse Barn is a beautifully converted 4-bedroom barn situated in Dordogne in the South West of France. The property is an hour and 40 minutes from Bergerac Airport; Ryanair fly direct to here from London Stansted in an hour and 45 minutes. If you wish to travel by car, it is an 8-hour drive from Calais but there are, of course, plenty of scenic stopover options on the way.
The old farmhouse overlooks the gorgeous French countryside and the views will simply take your breath away. The property itself is a wonderful converted 19th century farmhouse, with beautiful oak beams throughout and a comfortable, sunny, relaxed feel. The main lounge area has comfortable sofas; ideal for relaxing in and catching up with family. The charming garden is definitely a large appeal and the stylish garden furniture is perfect for view-gazing with a glass of something suitable in hand. There is a television with Freeview, a selection of board games, complimentary Wi-Fi, CD, MP3 player and iPod docking station to keep you entertained inside if the weather forces you in from the garden! This is very much a family property (free cot and high chair are available on request) but would be great with a group of friends also, no same-sex parties are permitted and no pets are allowed either. Private parking is included but the owners will assist with arranging transfers from the local airport or train station if required.
There are two king-size bedrooms and two twin rooms on the first floor. Each includes a wardrobe and bedside tables. The bathroom has a shower cubicle, vanity unit and toilet, and there is also a second bathroom on the ground floor which includes a fully tiled shower room and toilet.
The property is well setup for self-catering; there is a large fully equipped kitchen and open-planned dining area on the ground floor, complete with large dining table and chairs, but I would imagine you’ll make a lot more use of the raised, decked dining area with table, chairs and a large sun parasol outside! There is also a BBQ so al-fresco dining is very much in order. A meal on arrival service is available which allows you to avoid the lazy, trying-to-cobble-something-together ritual when you first arrive somewhere! There is also a generous welcome basket with homemade goodies to set you up at first. A great selection of restaurants and cafes can be found in the local area if you wish to take a break from cooking – your lovely hosts will be happy to provide you with recommendations.
The property is set in a rural hamlet but there is plenty to explore locally; the nearby towns of Gourdon, Masclat, Domme and Souillac are all worth a visit, several of these have lovely French markets too. The Dordogne River is just 5.5km away and a leisurely canoe through the villages is a lovely afternoon activity. There is an attractive lake beach about 15 minutes away and a swimming pool lido in Gourdon which is just 10kms up the road. The countryside will take a large portion of your time and there are lots of different ways to appreciate it; there are hundreds of marked walks, you can hire bicycles, fish or engage in water-sports or even take a hot air balloon ride!
For a peaceful break away with family or a group of friends, the Nicotiana French Farmhouse Barn is a delightful, welcoming base to call your own while you get to know the beautiful area of Dordogne.
