Book A Stay

When you wake up at the La Fregate Hotel in St Peter Port you wake up to the best view in Guernsey. The vista that greets you spans from the forested hills to the right of this beautiful harbor-side town, across to the Islands of Sark and Herm in front of you, then around to St Sampsons to the North. In between you can watch the Condor chug in and out of the harbour, the many little craft and yachts making their journeys between the channel islands, and of course the numerous cruise ships that anchor off shore for the day. While we stayed, the gargantuan P&O Britannia spent the day in port, but whenever you stay, you can be assured of a constantly changing view to gaze out on. This is what La Fregate is all about; relaxing and absorbing that magnificent view.

La Fregate Hotel is located up one of the windiest of Guernsey lanes, the sort which knocks both your wing mirrors off. Once through the door you enter a historic Guernsey mansion. Dating back to the 18th Century, parts of the hotel showcase the original heavily beamed ceilings and thick stone doorways that would have been part of the original construction. Downstairs the cosy bar area embraces the history with plenty of character and exposed brickwork. The bar spills out onto the terrace which spans the hotel and offers plenty of seating under parasols, all of which look out upon the port.

Adjoining the bar is an excellent restaurant which specialises in locally caught fish, although their steaks and chicken dishes are equally accomplished. Upstairs each bedroom faces outwards to make the most of the vista, some with terraces, others with balconies all boasting the same incredible view.

The centre of St Peter Port is just a short stroll away. A pretty footpath drops down from the hotel’s lawned gardens to take you into the centre in under 5 minutes. Although do be prepared to battle the same flight of stairs on the way back up which makes for a great work out!

Bar & Restaurant
As our room was not quite ready for our early arrival, we spent a lovely afternoon enjoying a shandy on the terrace. We weren’t the only ones enjoying the afternoon sunshine as the bar seemed popular with hotel residents and locals alike. In the evening we returned to the same terrace to sip more drinks and to watch the sun go down over the town.

Our drinks were followed by a superb meal at La Fregate’s main restaurant. Here they serve up some of the most delicious fish and crab dishes on Guernsey. I started with seared tuna with avocado and my husband chose crab. Both were generous and paired with excellent sauces. Delicious. For main I went for bream and my husband had a mix of fish and scallops. Once again the sauces and accompaniments made the dishes even more tasty. For desert, we chose an apple pie with ice cream that had hints of cinnamon and was sweet and light, and the chefs selection of 5 deserts. Each desert sample was more delicious than the next; top picks were a chocolate moose cake, and the cheesecake with a hint of pistachio.

From my experience of the Guernsey dining scene, this is the best fish restaurant on the island. I highly recommend it. The fact that you can enjoy the food with mesmerising views is the icing on the cake.

Room
The rooms at La Fregate are modern and spacious and all offer the magnificent views mentioned above. Our room was immaculate with new soft furnishings, an elevated sitting area with a table and 2 leather armchairs by the window. Outside we had 2 loungers and seats. The bed was huge and comfortable and there was a decent sized desk plus all electrical amenities you could wish for; LCD TV, DVD player etc. The bathroom was modern with Rituals toiletries. The size of the patio made the room feel like it was a beautiful apartment in Guernsey rather than just a hotel room. Not to mention the views, take a look at the pictures, they are unbeatable!

La Fregate Hotel is a very loved boutique hotel. Expect modern interiors and a view from every room, a bar with a fabulous terrace and one if the islands best restaurants. More than enough reasons for me to recommend the La Fregate as a brilliant choice of hotel for exploring the magical Island of Guernsey.

La Fregate hotel also features in our choice of the best luxury hotel in St Peter Port, Guernsey.
