Based in North West London, Cagnino NW10 brings together stylish fashion accessories and homeware that are authentic in construction and have been designed to work in every modern home. Founder and designer Deniz Cureklibatir started the business 3 years ago and was inspired by beautiful old hamam towels, also known as peshtamal, that have been used in Turkish baths for centuries during the ottoman empire. I was lucky enough to meet Deniz to find out a little more about the company.
Tell us a little more about what inspired you to start the business?
I decided to take the concept of the beautiful peshtamal and develop it into a luxury product that would be available at high street prices – no home should be without one. The peshtamal has been around since the end of The Roman Empire and was most notably used by the Sultans, courtiers, men, women and children of the Ottoman Empire. Today it remains on trend with our vibrant contemporary designs, perfect for the 21st century. We chose to have our products authentically created in Denizli in Turkey, where the cotton is actually picked, spun and hand woven by artisans on vintage looms all in one place. I visited the factory in Turkey three times before we went ahead with our first production run and we have chosen to use the finest cotton mixed with bamboo which gives us a versatility. We have focused on the authenticity of the weave, the highest quality cotton and keeping the product special. All our designs absorb water, making them great for both the beach and bathroom, but most are used as decorative wraps and throws.
Where did you get your design inspiration from?
I get inspiration from original weaves, geometric patterns and the amazing Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. All of the weaves are our own designs, although we can’t claim to have invented the herringbone!
Where can people buy your peshtamals?
We sell our products on our website, however they can also be found in small boutiques and online retailers across London and the UK. Currently our collection of premium woven wraps features five contemporary designs in a range of colours, which make them the perfect all-rounder for both you and for your home.
What is your favourite piece?
My personal favourite is the Herringbone, it’s beautiful as a wrap and changes the setting and feeling of a living room right away.
