British Airways is launching buy on Board for food and drink for its short-haul economy flights from January 2017 and you can redeem your Avios airmiles on the Marks & Spencer sandwiches that are on offer.

Although not all the rates have been finalised, Business Traveller magazine reveals the items that have.

A Mature Cheddar Cheese Ploughmans will cost £3.00 GBP or 375 Avios (valuing your Avios at £0.008 GBP)
Lightly salted hand cooked crisps will cost £1.00 GBP or 125 (valuing your Avios at £0.008 GBP)
Water will cost £1.80 GBP or 225 (valuing your Avios at £0.008 GBP)
English breakfast tea/Java republic coffee will cost £2.30 GBP or 300 (valuing your Avios at under £0.008 GBP)
Spirit & mixer (G&T) will cost £6.00 GBP or 750 (valuing your Avios at £0.008 GBP)
Wine will cost £4.50 GBP or 575 (valuing your Avios at just under £0.008 GBP)

This comes in at slightly under what I believe an Avios to be worth (which is £0.01 GBP). Your alternative is to spend your Avios on Club Europe where food and drink is included.

This new option to redeem your Avios for food and drink on board is a good idea although not overly generous. Certainly it will enable flyers to get food and drink on board without having to put their hands in their wallets.

The airline says that the new M&S menus will be changed seasonally (each quarter). Marks & Spencer will supply the “Food on the Go”, but drinks will be supplied via airline supplier, Tourvest.
