For a beautiful, intimate boutique hotel that is the very essence of responsible tourism, Johannesburg’s Peech Hotel is the place to stay. Billed as eco-chic, it has recently been certified as a Fair Trade in Tourism hotel and has been nominated as South Africa’s leading Boutique Hotel for the last five years. Johannesburg is South Africa’s largest city; it is a rapidly modernising, bustling, urban environment. Cultural districts Newtown and Braamfontein are rife with theatres, restaurants, cafes and museums. One must visit is the Apartheid Museum for a sobering reminder of the past. It takes just under 11 hours to get here from London, the hotel can be found in the leafy Melrose suburb a 45 minute drive from the airport.
The Peech has sixteen bedrooms and a Bistro Restaurant and is set in one acre of stunning, lush gardens. The eco in eco-chic is well deserved; the hotel employs industry-leading environmental policies and practises (including solar geysers and grey water recycling) and is committed to supporting the local community. The rooms are spacious and the chic design reflects the local area beautifully with funky prints sitting alongside modern furnishings and stylish accessories. A calm, comfortable atmosphere prevails throughout the hotel and the accommodating staff are always on hand to assist you.
There is a choice of House Rooms, Garden Rooms or Garden Suites. The House Rooms are situated in the original residence and are designed accordingly; reflecting the character and style of this old house. The Garden Rooms overlook the hotel’s gardens and all feature either a private patio or balcony. The Garden Suites would be my personal preference, they are the largest rooms and include an open-plan living space with the rather fabulous touch of a hanging pod chair offering beautiful garden views. All rooms are en-suite and include complimentary Wi-Fi, air conditioning, flat screen TV, Nespresso machine, bathroom with walk-in Raindance showers and separate baths, plus Molton Brown products.
Restaurant & Bar
The Bistro Restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor dining; with sandstone floors, deep leather couches and a walk-in wine cellar you can be sure that the chic vibe continues perfectly here. The menu is sophisticated with a strong leaning towards local influences including delights such as Moroccan lamb and Cajun seafood. Fresh, seasonal ingredients are sourced, in fact many come from the hotel’s very own vegetable garden. A delicious breakfast is also served in the Bistro Restaurant, though breakfast in bed is also on offer and included in the room rate! For a great spot to relax after dinner, the Peech Bar features beers and fine wines from local independent craft producers.
Pool & Other Facilities
For a small hotel, it is surprisingly well serviced. The outdoor swimming pool is small but in a lovely setting, plus there is a library, a meeting room for 10 and of course the beautiful gardens to enjoy.
For an oasis of calm in a busy metropolis, The Peech is perfect base from which to explore.
