The world’s largest airport passenger terminal and the world’s largest commercial aviation hub will soon be Beijing’s Daxing Airport. The first phase of the airport is expected to open in 2019, with four runways capable of accommodating up to 45 million passengers per year.
When the entire airport is complete, it will house seven runways and will have the capacity to handle 100 million passengers each year. Final completion is scheduled for 2040.
Interestingly, Beijing’s current airport is already huge, however, due to the accelerated growth in China, it is currently exceeding its planned capacity.
The facility itself will be shaped to resemble a phoenix, complementing the existing dragon shaped Beijing Capital International airport. The design enables baggage to be transported to and from the checkin to planes in under 13 minutes, while passengers will be able to walk from customs to the boarding gates within eight minutes.
