There is nothing like getting away. Whether your destination is Cornwall or the Cotswolds, it is great to pack up the car and travel down winding country roads to reach gorgeous cottage bolt-holes in the English countryside. There is however something that always concerns me about cottage breaks and that is the self catering aspect. The last thing I want to do on a trip away is to be searching for a supermarket and then to trawl down its aisles, wasting my precious holiday time. I was therefore rather pleased with myself when I discovered Gousto Boxes.
What are Gousto Boxes?
Gousto Boxes are a subscription delivery service. Gousto will supply everything you need for a complete main dish right down to the herbs and spices in cute little sachets. In fact the only thing you will need to supply is the olive oil, salt and pepper and of course the wine! These boxes are delivered to your door with an easy pictorial menu card which even a rather poor cook like me can follow.
How do Gousto Boxes work?
You choose your delivery date and your menu choices, from 4-16 portions, (4 portions works out at £6.87 per portion and 16 works out at £3.25 per portion), and get the box delivered to your cottage retreat pre-arrival (just select the option of an outdoor area like a garage). You then have your food for the night or the week sorted.
My Gousto Box Review
In order to review the Gousto Box subscription service it was only right that I make my own order. The site was easy to use and I selected my menus quickly. I received my Gousto Box for 2 meals earlier this week. My fish and my chicken dishes were super easy to prepare. The menu cards were brilliant and the fact that all the required herbs were supplied in sachets meant that I didn’t even need to faff about working out how much of each to put in. My preparation took around 10 minutes and frying my fish up took another 6 minutes. Almost as fast as making a takeaway order and so much more healthy. The resulting meal, which you can see below, was so tasty that I wouldn’t hesitate to re-order the same again, although the beauty of Gousto boxes is that their menus are ever-changing so you can try something different every week. The highlight for me was the menu cards that you can keep and the fact that Gousto inspires you to try new recipes without having to shop for the ingredients. With Gousto, you cook up the menu, try the dish and pick out your favourite bits to repeat. I liked my salsa side so much that I am adding the ingredients to my usual Waitrose order for next week.
I am now a subscriber (although you can do one-off deliveries for your trips away) and when I next head to a cottage in the Cotswolds, I will simply amend my delivery address and, hey presto, I will arrive at my bolt-hole with the kitchen already kitted out with some fabulous food. Am I feeling smug? Hell yes!
If you would like to try Gousto, we have a 1 month subscription up for grabs in our travel auction.
