Name: Summerfields Rose Retreat and Spa
Location: South Africa
If you’re looking for a romantic getaway somewhere special, to rekindle a spark or celebrate an anniversary, you would be hard pushed to find a more natural or romantic setting than Summerfields Rose Retreat and Spa in South Africa. Set in 100 acres of macadamia, granadilla and litchi farm, this truly magical escape surrounds you with stunning roses, protective bushveld, gushing streams and the calming sights and sounds of nature. Lying just outside Hazyview (aptly named for a romantic escape), Mpumalanga and 10 kilometres from the Phabeni gate to the famous Kruger National Park, this luxury retreat will revive your senses and rekindle the magic.
Run by husband and wife team, Andre and Ilse, Summerfields Rose Retreat and Spa is a romantic riverside lodge comprising of 12 five-star luxury tented suites hidden under a canopy of Jackalberry and Tambotie trees, overlooking the Sabie River. Now before you stop reading because I’ve mentioned the word ‘tent’, let me reassure you that this is no cold, wet and windy campsite experience that you have to endure and there are no horrendous shared shower cubicles in sight, instead the suites are more like luxury lodge rooms that have been filled with wonderful fresh scented roses. Each private tented suite is accessed by raised wooden walkway and comprises of a beautiful, comfy and luxurious bed, specially designed wooden furniture and a wonderful private deck from which to admire the best nature has to offer (including lazing hippos and crocodiles!). Adjoining each luxury tented suite is a fantastic open-air bathroom with outdoor shower, freestanding bath tub and his and hers sinks all decorated with fresh roses, twined wooden twig mirrors and candles to add to the romance of it all. In fact, the only things that reminds you that you are in a tent, as opposed to a luxury hotel room, are the canvas walls and draped ceilings, that I personally think really add to this enchanting experience. All suites are air-conditioned with additional roof fans, and come with towels, robes, toiletries, tea and coffee making facilities, safe and a private fridge (note: there is a strict no children under 12 policy in the suites). I always think it’s the little touches that make a stay really special and this retreat has them in spades from the fresh roses adorning every room and available space, to the delicious roasted macadamia nuts to be found on your bedside table. Summerfields Rose Retreat actually produce and sell their own Macadamia Butter, Oil and Nuts at the property. Tip: During your stay request a candlelight rose geranium salt bath for two (which the staff will draw for you) accompanied by champagne and homemade treats – truly amazing and very memorable! The retreat also offers a lounge with satellite television and library area with views over the Sabie River, as well as macadamia and litchi orchards to wander through and beautiful gardens filled with many of the Summerfields roses.
Should you wish to leave the sanctuary and tranquillity of Summerfields Rose Retreat and Spa, though I’m not sure why you would, the retreat lies just 10 kilometers from the famous Kruger National Park and is within a short driving distance to Sabie, Graskop, White River and many of the Lowveld’s beauty spots. The retreat itself also arranges a variety of activities; including walks, swimming, cycling and their popular weekend Parkrun.
The retreat features two excellent dining options: the River Café and Summerfields Kitchen which both boast dishes created with ingredients from their organic gardens and farm. The River Café, which is open for breakfast and light lunches from Tuesday to Sunday, is set on the banks of the Sabie River and can be reached by a short stroll through a forested walkway and across a stone bridge. Summerfields Kitchen is open for breakfast (the menu of which changes daily but usually features scrambled egg, bacon, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, croissants, toast, tea and coffee) and light lunches throughout the week. Dinner at Summerfields Kitchen is a romantic affair, with tabled adorned with white linen, candlelight and more of their beautiful fresh roses. Their farm-to-table dining experience incomparable in the Lowveld. Note: children under 12 are not allowed in the River Café and not during dinner in the Summerfields Kitchen.
The Summerfields Spa is a retreat in itself, surrounded by bush-clad mountains and set right on the edge of the Sabie River. The spa, open 7 days a week, is just a short walk from the tented Suites, offering indulgence and healing through a variety of unique, signature treatments. The spa features a rose quartz steam shower, steam room, Jacuzzi, swimming pool, Vichy shower, unisex change rooms and hydro walk along the banks of the Sabie.
So if you fancy trying a slice of this ‘barefoot luxury’ lifestyle, where you can kick off your shoes (and your worries) and enjoy some five-star pampering in the midst of the glorious African bush, then book a stay at Summerfields Rose Retreat and Spa right away, you won’t regret it!
