Sandcastle Hotel Opens In The Netherlands

Have you ever built a magnificent sandcastle on the beach and then wished that you could shrink yourself so that you could live in it? Well, this dream can now come true as the first-ever sandcastle hotels have opened in the Dutch towns of Oss and Sneek by Zand Hotels.

These fully furnished luxury one-room suites, complete with windows, electricity, running water, and Wi-Fi, have been built as part of the annual sand sculpture festivals in Sneek, Friesland, and Oss, Brabant.

Global PowWow spent four weeks constructing these sand hotel sculptures, inspired by the Ice hotels in Sweden and Finland. The structure of the hotel is made of thin walls, covered inside and out with reinforced sand to ensure it does not crumble. However, the shower, bathroom fittings, and deluxe box spring bed are made from traditional materials.

An overnight stay for two would have cost only $168 USD a night, and included a personal tour of the nearby Friesland festival. I say would have, as the rooms have completely sold out, and being only temporary, the sand or Zand hotels will be taken down when the festival ends. But all is not lost. Zand Hotels does have plans to create similar hotels in Germany and the UK. Watch this space!
