Following the failure of the InterContinental hotel group to secure a takeover of Starwood hotels, InterContinental are now looking towards making a bid for luxury chain Fairmont and Switzerland’s Mövenpick.
InteContinental which owns the Holiday Inn brand was rumored to be pursuing a deal with Starwood although apparently “talks never got off the ground” because of regulatory hurdles. Now it looks to Fairmont and Mövenpick and we watch in interest.
Fairmont in particular is an interesting fit for the 5-star InterContinental brand. I for one would be interested in staying at an Intercontinental Monte Carlo! How they could possibly combine loyalty schemes, particularly as Fairmont has thousands of lifetime members with some amazing complimentary night benefits, is unclear at this early stage. Bet there certainly appears to be plenty of money sloshing about in mergers and acquisitions within the hotel industry at the moment.
