What makes a hotel room one of the best in the world? A beachfront location? A private plunge pool? Achingly stylish decor? For me it is all of the above and the Nihiwatu in Bali is a wonderful example of the perfect hotel room.
Nihiwatu is a remote, luxury eco lodge on the distant island of Sumba in Indonesia, just a short flight from Bali. It supports local villagers who follow an ancient, tribal culture and empowers the local communities to support themselves and their families and give them the opportunity to improve their own lives.
Nihiwatu is the only western hotel on the island and is an outpost to world-class surfing, the best sport fishing in Indonesia, hiking through breath taking waterfalls, ancient villages and butterfly trails and Stand-up Paddling down the Wanukaka River.
Tucked amongst the trees are Nihiwatu’s 21 uber luxury villas perched above the Indian Ocean and hand-built by local craftsmen using materials indigenous to Indonesia, like Alang Alang, teak and rattan.
All of our villas feature spacious outdoor living areas and private Bales to soak up the panoramic views and visionary gold of the Sumba sunsets. The emphasis is on open-plan living that reflects the simplicity and beauty of Sumbanese architecture.
I love the day beds on your private veranda, which jutsout into the beach (see featured picture). The best day bed in the world – it must be!
