West Thirty Six Review, London

West Thirty Six is West London’s answer to Central London’s Chiltern Firehouse and East London’s Shoreditch House. This Notting Hill grill house and cocktail lounge enjoys an enviable location on Golborne Road next to West London’s stylish Notting Hill. West Thirty Six opened its doors in January 2015 and with a close proximity to the non-stop energy of Portobello Road, it is well located for trendy West Londoners and Tatler socialites.

Robert Newmark has engaged Chef Jon Pollard (Soho House-Caprice Holdings) to help West Thirty Six create a suitable offering for its target market and the crowd tends to attract “Made in Chelsea” sorts, well spoken chaps in jumpers and loafers quaffing whisky and girls with cocktails and expensive handbags.

West Thirty Six takes classic items from a conventional grill house menu and places a unique twist on them. As well as cooking with natural fuels and charcoal to deliver the finest quality, they produce in house dry-aged beef and a special charcuterie ensuring that their massive steaks are a staple choice for many visitors. Alongside the high quality meat and comfort food, the kitchen creates wholesome fresh salads alongside the other organic offerings. They stay true to the philosophy of buying the best British produce and delivering an authentic taste.

On the ground floor you will find a charming if hectic Soho House-style bistro. The first floor has a bar, small lounge area and dining area. Upstairs are private “party rooms”. There are two outdoor spaces one with a fire pit situated out back called the Tool Shed smoking area and overlooking the railway tracks. There is an open grill and a bar over all four floors.

The lounge areas are particularly stylish with dark panelled walls. Here you can sink into huge leather sofas and prop your feet up on dark, low coffee tables. This is a quieter place to eat although people are more commonly found sampling the killer cocktails in the candle light and plush surroundings.

Certainly Robert Newmark has achieved what he planned. West Thirty Six is worth travelling to and feels like a luxury members club without actually being one. It attracts a trendy and fun crowd which gives it a trendy and fun atmosphere and the food offering is really rather good.
