Situated on the shores of St Ives Bay, this picturesque fishing town is one of the most famous Cornish holiday destinations. A maze of tiny cobbled streets lead you to the harbour where boats still land good catches of fresh fish. Surrounded by four award- winning beaches, St Ives enjoys beautiful golden sands and crystal blue waters offering stunning seaside vistas from every corner.
Nestled in the historic centre between the spectacular Porthminster beach and the Harbour beach is Trevose Harbour House. The cottage was built around 1850 and showcases the classic St Ives whitewashed look set in the muddle of the windy cobbled streets that make up St Ives. The interiors of this five-star boutique hotel mix stunning up-cycled furniture with seaside blues and whites. Old Scandinavian sideboards, retro drawers, re-upholstered 60s chairs, classic lampshades, seaside artwork and vintage mirrors, complement the sweet-smelling Neal’s Yard toiletries and pretty candle lanterns.
Each room is different, but with the same fresh blue-white tones. Luxury Travel Diary’s two favourite rooms are the The Terrace Deluxe, an annexe at the back with distant harbour views and which is so romantic that three marriage proposals were made here within six months, and the suite which is a delicious penthouse escape with sea views a sheepskin rug, and chaise longue to relax in. It’s ensuite offers a roll-top bath under Velux windows – you can bathe under the stars!
Rooms 1 and 2 (shower-only) look over the cobbled alleyway; 3 (with roll-top bath) and 4 have bay windows overlooking the sea. All six rooms feature large Hypnos beds, iPod docks, Neal’s Yard toiletries; local artwork, mid-century modern chairs, contemporary fabrics. Spoiling touches include thick bathrobes, artisan biscuits, turndown service.
The award-winning locally sourced breakfast is also worth a mention. With a spread of homemade Bircher muesli, daily changing smoothies and organic cooked options including full English and Smoked Salmon from the Penryn Smokehouse which will set you up for the 6 mile walk along South West Coast Path to Zennor. If you prefer a drive, the Eden Project, Padstow, the Lost Gardens of Heligan are all about an hours drive.
Angela and Olivier are perfect hosts; you feel instantly welcome and they really do make a stay at Trevose Harbour House special. They have made their hotel an adults only retreat which results in beautifully peaceful and romantic surrounds. Of note is that there is very limited parking (a couple of spaces) at extra cost and parking in St Ives can be a nightmare, so in the summer you may do better arriving on the train.
If you’re looking for a deeply trendy boutique bolt hole by the sea, this boutique retreat will make you fall in love with Cornwall and each other.
