Reviews : Accommodation

Name: Carcavelos Surf House

Location: Portugal

The Carcavelos beach is located between Lisbon and Cascais, in one of the most iconic and attractive areas in Portugal not only because of the weather, but also because of the beauty of the landscape. This urban beach is also considered the birthplace of surf in Portugal. All year round this surf destination attracts hardened surfers because of the brilliant waves. In the winter the surf is consistent and tubular, but the beach enjoys excellent conditions for surfing lessons during almost the entire year. In the summer the waves are not so regular, but it is still the ideal place to learn and as the warm Portuguese winds blow, this glorious beach is consistently considered a top location for surfers in Europe.

Carcavelos surf house & surf school is perfectly located between Lisbon and Cascais, just a few minutes from Carcavelos, Costa da Caparica and other surf spots on the Lisbon coast. It teaches surfing skills to students from all over the world, supplies a wide range of surfboards and wetsuits and promotes harmony with nature, a healthy lifestyle and greater environmental awareness. Classes cover students of all ages and levels. If you are ever tempted to try surfing, body boarding or stand up paddle, this is the place!

Located in the village of Carcavelos the Carcavelos Surf House is the ideal base for your surfing break. Combining rustic decor with modern detailing, bright colours and warm hospitality this is not luxury in the 5 star sense, but the whole house exudes a warmth and friendliness and the setting is relaxing communal living around a private pool. Being a short walk from the beach, bikes are supplied if you want to ride to the shore (5mins away). The Surf House is peaceful at night being set back from the beachfront so perfect for a good nights sleep whilst being close enough to the action to indulge in any parties going on.

The Carcavelos Surf House has 4 bedrooms in total but we particularly like the super studio which is independent of the main house, situated in the garden, near the pool, with kitchenette, private bathroom, air conditioning, with 1 double bed, 1 double sofa bed and 1 single bed and which also enjoys access to all public areas of the main house, pool and garden.

Leave your Louboutin’s behind and get back to nature for a really special surfing break at this perfect home from home for want to be surfers.

Other Surf Spots Nearby include:

TORRE BEACH is a winter spot, sheltered from big swells W and S/SW. When the other spots don’t have good conditions for surfing, Torre is a possibility where you can find small but perfect waves near the fortress. For more experienced surfers, the beach offers a fast and hollow left and right wave.

SANTO AMARO DE OEIRAS is one of the best point breaks in Portugal. Works with the winter swells coming from NW/W/SW. For the advanced and fearless surfers the entry in the water can be done behind the peak from the rocks but it’s important to choose the right time or you can be dragged back to the rocks. The wave is heavy, fast and hollow wave that  is much appreciated by some of the best Portuguese surfers. The best season is between october and march during winter swells.

COSTA DA CAPARICA has many peaks to choose. There are waves for all surfing levels. It is also an area with lots of crowd, but the surf is almost always guaranteed even in summer.

S. PEDRO ESTORIL is situated in the beautiful Estoril coast. It is known for his long righthand wave that breaks along the cliffs. Further south there’s Bafureira that breaks to both sides. Both waves have a mixed background of sand and rock, hence, some caution is advised. As in Carcavelos, during the summer season, the swell is very inconsistent.

GUINCHO BEACH is internationally known for its characteristics and the strong northerly winds, it is highly appreciated during the summer season by widsurfers and kitesurfers from around the world. However Guincho also has excellent conditions for surfing and is one of the few beaches in Lisbon which works with south wind.

PRAIA GRANDE is one of the beaches in the municipality of Sintra. It has excellent conditions for surfing. Due to it being a sheltered beach it isn´t usually very windy. However and due to the microclimate of Sintra in the summer there are many days when the sky appears overcast.

ERICEIRA is one of the most consistent surf spots in Portugal. With several peaks as Foz do Lizandro, Ribeira d’Ilhas, Pedra Branca, São Lourenço, this area provides excellent conditions for surfing. Ericeira is the first Surfing Reserve in Europe and second of the world, officially recognized by the north american organization ‘Save the Waves Coalition’, which highlights the excellence of natural features for surfing.
