I love Cornwall. My father is Cornish born and bred; he is the product of fresh Cornish sea air and pasties and his love for this part of the world is so acute that he seems to fall back into his West Country accent as soon as he crosses the Tamar. I have inherited this love for the South West of England and every year I try to head down to the most remote end of Cornwall to re-live my own childhood memories. My summers were a mix of glorious Enid Blyton style adventures, searching for crabs and fish in rock pools, exploring dragon-caves and building sandcastles and damns in near perfect bays and coves. Of course my optimistic nature makes me forget the days of grey rain and being confined to barracks at my grandfather’s bungalow watching the pink panther cartoons! Yes, rainy Cornwall is really rather grey, but when the sun is out, it truly is one of the most gorgeous places on earth.
And so to St Ives house. This beautifully finished beach house is sat right in the centre of the picturesque St Ives opposite the slipway and is surrounded by restaurants and galleries and couldn’t be better located for building sand castles by day and sipping a glass of wine with the catch of the day in the evening.
The house itself is a stylish retreat with a luxury feel. Little quirky touches such as lighting from the old Concord Hangar make this house completely unique. In fact, most of the house was made by local designers, artists, builders, joiners, welders and fisherman. Once inside, you wont know whether to look for the next objet d’art or to stare out at the panoramic views of the harbour.
St Ives House sleeps six in three comfortable bedrooms, two doubles on the second floor and a twin on the first. In the master bedroom you can look out to sea from your kingsize bed with the fire keeping you warm. In the summer throw open the window to the wharf and sit comfortably on the rotating two-man cozy sofa. There are three bathrooms. The en suite in the master bedroom boasts a gorgeous nickel bath so deep that you can wallow while reading your book or gazing out to sea. You’ll also find organic Cornish toiletries, fluffy towels, dressing gowns and slippers waiting for you..
On the top floor the bar, lounge and balcony have sea views across the bay and art works by Sam Hall and Richard Nott. The kitchen and dining area below is striking, with a TV and table sourced from a local granite quarry (as was the polished slate on the fireplace). The chairs were redesigned as a tribute to the original Acapulco chair, this time the frames were made by a local craftsman and then strung by a local fisherman.
All your needs will be fulfilled by the concierge service and extensive knowledge provided. You can also make use of the free spa and gym membership provided, indulge in the local restaurants or let a personal chef come to you. If this isn’t enough to keep you entertained St Ives is the perfect place to enjoy a class at the art school or visit local artists and galleries. For something a bit livelier why not head to the sea and experience surfing with expert local guides.
Other facilities worth mentioning include an essential Car parking space within St Ives, Bar, Wine fridge, Designer scented candles, Ice making machine, Smart 3D TV, Xbox 360 S 4GB with Kinect, Full Sky TV package, ipod docks, Coffee machine, Basic food provisions, Buckets & spades, Picnic basket, Directors’ chairs for beach, Beach towels, Gas effect log burner, Designer bedroom gas fire, Dishwasher, Washing machine, Tumble dryer, High chair, Travel cot, Iron and ironing board, hairdryer.
St Ives House has been voted as one of Britain’s 20 best beach houses in The Times and it gets the Luxury Travel Diary thumbs up as well. With airy rooms in the summer and cosy fires in the winter, it is a dream boutique beachfront retreat. A house with chic style and fine dining steps away, but that also encourages basic beachside fun. If you want to create your very own happy Cornish memories, this is surely the perfect place?
