I love Maui with its beautiful beaches and luxury hotels. Wailea is truly the perfect resort, and staying in a luxury resort couldn’t be more wonderful for a while. But if, like me, you sometimes get fed up of being a tourist and would like to experience the heart of a place, then you must look beyond the perfectly manicured lawns and golf courses that surround the picture perfect Wailea in search for that hidden gem.
The recently opened and completely unique Paia Inn Beach House with its authentic tin roof fits my requirement to find my “hidden gem” perfectly. Voted America’s most romantic hotel” by Travel and Leisure, Paia Inn is situated in the hippie town of Paia on Maui’s North Shore, and far from the luxury hotels in Wailea. This boutique hotel offers a stylish place to stay beside one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii. Put away your Louboutins, get out your flip flops, crack open a beer and bask in the sunshine like a local.
The rooms are boutique luxury. The base rooms are cute but not large and do not have a lanai. If you upgrade yourself to the fantastic partial ocean view suite (from only $400/nt) you will have your own private Lanai, bags of space and the perfect hideaway.
The hotel also has private beach access along a narrow path between private homes to a gate which opens with a key code, and then out on to a secluded and peaceful cove with very few tourists or locals. Beach chairs and umbrellas are provided by the hotel. In the evening bag a seat at Charlie’s Restaurant, a frequent hangout of Willie Nelson.
Don’t just vacation in Maui, feel the true heart of the Island at the Paia Inn. Doze in the sunshine on your lanai, stroll along the shoreline, chill out with the hippy vibe – this beachside retreat might just refresh you in a way that the luxury hotel up the road ever could..
