Glamping on the Isle of Wight

Reviews : Accommodation

Name: Really Green Holiday Company

Location: United Kingdom

I am not a big fan of camping but I would, at a push, consider glamping for the night as there is a romantic side of me that finds sleeping out under the stars with a camp fire appealing. Glamping with the Really Green Holiday Company truly is the luxury way to camp. It is situated on farmland at Kings Manor Farm, Freshwater on the pretty Isle of Wight, and offers extensive grounds with beautiful views of green fields and the River Yar. The Really Green Holiday Company is proud to have been voted No. 6 in BBC Countryfile Magazine survey of the Top 10 Eco-Breaks in the UK and has also won both the Green Business Award and the Accommodation and Hospitality Award in the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce Business Awards in 2009.

The Isle of Wight is a beautiful place to stay, with its own micro climate (often sunnier and warmer than the rest of England). Measuring 23 x 13 miles, the Island lies just off England’s South Coast, but no passport is needed for the short sea crossing – and once you’ve landed on the Island everything is within easy reach including: award-winning beaches, picturesque villages, spectacular cliffs and a rich historical heritage.

The very tranquil setting of the glamping ground is easily accessible from the Yarmouth Ferry Terminal by car or bicycle and is close to the main bus routes. Run by husband and wife team: Anthony and Alison, The Really Green Holiday Company make it easy to minimise the impact of your holiday on the environment whilst offering comfortable, high-quality, camping holidays in comfortable fully furnished canvas yurts. So you can immediately relax in one of their seven fully equipped and furnished Yurts. The Yurts have wooden floors and incredibly comfortable actual beds (none of that inflatable / camp bed nonsense!), futons, duvets, pillows and blankets as well as environmentally friendly compost toilets and solar showers. You can hire bed linen and towels for a small additional charge or simply bring your own for a taste of your home outdoors.

Catering-wise, the Yurts come with everything you need including: cooking utensils, pans, china, cutlery, mugs and wine glasses, there’s even a cafétiere for a proper coffee – simply bring your own food! The site provides wood burning stoves, barbeques and braziers all of which have a zero carbon footprint as they use wood from sustainable woodlands, however for those seeking the easier, less green alternative of a Calor gas cooker, these are available too. Each yurt has its own outdoor cooking and seating area, however there is also the “Dome”, a large undercover tented area providing weather-proof cooking, eating and seating facilities and a communal area for guests to mingle, which is very popular. If you’re looking for a break from the chore of cooking then there is the award winning Red Lion pub 5 minutes away and Kath’s Kitchen Farm Shop, Deli and Café which offers a delicious cooked breakfast, lunch or dinner just off the camp ground.

Keen to be green and support local industry, The Really Green Holiday Company uses local produce and suppliers, supports local businesses wherever possible and buys equipment and furnishings from companies with good green credentials. They also reduce, recycle and re-use everything they can and make it easy for glamping guests to do the same. To help with responsible travel Anthony and Alison are happy to arrange free transport from and to the Isle of Wight ferry terminal in Yarmouth and discounted cycle hire or bus rover tickets during your stay so that you can leave the car at home.

If would like to get close to nature whilst maintaining an element of luxury,The Really Green Holiday Company is definitely worth a look and I challenge you to scroll through the pictures and not then be slightly tempted to try one of their beautiful yurts!
