Book A Stay

If you’re considering a European City Break, but want to avoid the tourist hotspots of Paris, Venice, and Vienna, then Hamburg in Germany might be a great destination choice. Germany’s second-largest city, after Berlin, and its biggest port, Hamburg in northern Germany, is a picturesque city surrounded by large parkland areas and crisscrossed by hundreds of canals and waterways.

Location

The central Jungfernstieg Boulevard, which lies beside the Binnenalster Lake, connects the pretty Altstadt (old town) and the Neustadt (new town), with many boats, cafes, bistros, and restaurants to admire along the way. A great, centrally located luxury hotel to lay your head on each night is the Hotel ARCOTEL Onyx which boasts a modern design with plenty of character.

Style & Character

This four-star superior hotel looks rather domineering from the outside with its all-glass façade, but I think this rather beautifully reflects the many glistening waterways of this beautiful city. The ARCOTEL Onyx Hamburg lies on the Reeperbahn, at Millerntor, right in the heart of the city’s trendy neighborhood of St. Pauli, making this hotel the perfect base from which to discover the harbor, historical Speicherstadt warehouse district, and the musicals and theatres in the area.

Rooms

The hotel has 215 rooms and suites mainly decorated in monochrome with hints of saffron yellow as well as stylish and quirky interior design touches like irregularly shaped lamp shades and almost Alice-In-Wonderland style unusually shaped headboards. All the rooms come with Joka mattresses, cozy window seats, air conditioning, flat-screen TV, mini-bar, safe, cordless telephone, hairdryer, tea and coffee making, and use of the spa and gym.

You can choose between Comfort and Superior Rooms, Junior Suites, Suites, Apartments, and Theme Rooms. The fashionably furnished Comfort Rooms range in size from 24-26 m² and feature twin or double beds, a sitting area, and a bathroom with a shower or bathtub.

In addition to everything the Comfort Rooms offer, the Superior Rooms provide guests with more space, an iPod docking station, and a pamper package consisting of more luxurious cosmetic products, plush bathrobes and slippers. The large Junior Suites offer combined living and sleeping areas with a comfy leather sofa (which can double as an extra bed), an extra-large bed, and a bathroom with a bathtub.

Full Suites offer separate living, work, and sleeping areas featuring a circular theme, including a fabulous unique round bed with a round tasseled mirror above, circular windows, and a top-of-the-range bathroom with a marble floor. Tip: Enjoy the minibar, as it’s all included in the Suite’s price.

Uniquely, there are also three Theme Rooms, each with its own style: the exotic Kiez Room includes a purple designer sofa, headboard in the shape of lips, and a pole dancing pole(!?); the Nautical Room features deck flooring, sloping walls and a porthole to give the feeling of being aboard a ship; and the Musical Room takes its lead from the hit musical Rocky, with an unusual sofa in the shape of a boxing glove, a punching bag and exclusive photos taken during rehearsals for the musical’s world premiere in Hamburg.

Finally, as if there hadn’t been enough choice already, there are also the Business Apartments with magnificent views over the lively entertainment district. These large apartments feature separate sleeping and living areas, a modern stand-up bar, a guest toilet, and a top-of-the-range bathroom with a marble floor. Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper, ask for a room on one of the higher floors away from the atrium and elevators – you also get better views on the higher floors.

Service & Facilities

In addition to all the accommodations, the hotel also features a boardroom for up to 12 people; a public garage adjoining the hotel; a gym with all the latest fitness equipment (including treadmills, ergometer, stepper, line bench, and training wall) and a spa which offers a sauna area with Finnish dry sauna and steam bath, massage showers, and a relaxation room.

Food & Drink

There is plenty of great dining in this city with hundreds of great local and international restaurants, not forgetting the delicious oysters and traditional Aalsuppe (a type of soup), which are tasty local specialties.

The hotel offers the Bar Wiener Café, which is open all day serving Viennese coffee specialties, beers, wines, and cocktails, as well as hot and cold snacks, gateaux, cakes, and chocolates made in the hotel’s very own on-site patisserie.

The Wiener Bistro serves a varied and healthy buffet breakfast with local and regional specialties, jams, cheeses, sausages, fresh bread rolls, tasty pastries, a muesli station, and fresh fruit. Tip: They also offer tasty vegan alternatives and lactose-free options.

Conclusion

A stay at the ARCOTEL Onyx in Hamburg offers a fantastic location in the heart of the city, friendly staff, and unique and quirky accommodation that will leave you with a great memory of this beautiful city.
